Adams State recommended for continuing accreditation (02-28-07)

Adams State College will be recommended for continuing ten-year accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC), according to Adams State President, Dr. David Svaldi.

The HLC consultant-evaluator team concluded its site visit of Adams State Wednesday. The site team chair, Dr. Jane Toot of Grand Valley State University in Michigan, said, "We love this institution and the fact that the faculty, staff, and community walk the talk of Adams State's mission. Adams State lives its mission, and that is evident throughout the campus.

"We are astounded by the sense of community - not just on the campus, but among people in the area. There is a really positive feeling here. You're to be commended."

"I'm extremely proud of the outcome of this visit, and I appreciate all the hard work that occurred across the campus," Svaldi said. "I especially want to commend the work of Dr. Guy Farish, who headed our Self-Study effort over the last two years."

In its exit interview with college leaders, the team noted a key strength is the Adams State Board of Trustees' "complete commitment to the institution and its mission." The team also praised:

- an integrated approach to student services that facilitates overall student success

- a transparent budget process that allows informed decision making

- community outreach that honors the college mission

- cultural endeavors that sustain the cultural heritage of the region

- the Extended Studies program's exemplary commitment to sustainable growth and service

Among the challenges the team noted is the need to address faculty retention to ensure a foundation of academic excellence. Svaldi said the college trustees and administration have made a commitment to improve faculty salaries. The team also said that it is necessary to make a budget commitment to deferred facility maintenance.

The HLC has requested the college address the following concerns:

1. Formalization of the strategic planning process

2. Clarification of the assessment process

3. Delineation of the role of faculty shared governance

4. Clarification of the college's administrative structure

Adams State's next comprehensive accreditation visit will be in academic year 2016-17.
