Adams State alumnus receives Science Teaching Excellence Award (06-13-07)

Gary Wilkinson '76 '84 receives the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence from Dave Bengston, Vice President of Amgen Colorado Site Operations in Boulder.

Adams State College alumnus, Gary Wilkinson '76 '84, received the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence in Boulder, Colorado on May 14.

He was recognized along with 29 other science teachers from the United States and Puerto Rico for his contributions to the science program in Monte Vista High School.

Wilkinson has been employed by the Monte Vista School District for nearly thirty years and his daughter, Kellyn Ross, received her bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary studies at the Adams State May commencement ceremony. He received a bachelor of science in chemistry and a master of arts in science education from Adams State College.

During his teaching career, he has taught a variety of classes including physics, chemistry, web page design, life science, general science, advanced chemistry, physical science, mathematics and consumer chemistry.

"I intend to reach every student regardless of his or her learning style," Wilkinson said. "It is for this reason my approach is eclectic; I combine any and all instructional methods so that no student is left behind."

Although he excels in all of the subjects he teaches, his most notable program is his award winning Science Seminar program. The program offers students the opportunity to explore their interests using the scientific method. Students formulate ideas, research, and produce a science fair project. The students then compete at regional, state, and international fairs. His program has given 40 students the chance to participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair, over half of which have received awards.

"The true benefit of the Science Seminar program is enhanced self-esteem and personal growth," Wilkinson said. "I am proud the program appeals to all types of students. Many of my students claim their Science Seminar project helped them solidify or determine their future goals."

Amgen, a biotechnology pioneer, discovers, develops, manufactures and markets important human therapeutics for serious illnesses. This company developed an annual awards program to recognize extraordinary contributions by educators across the United States and Puerto Rico who are elevating the level of science literacy through creativity in the classroom and motivation of students.

Since the beginning of the program in 1992, Amgen has awarded more than $1.7 million to public and private school science teachers across the country. The program seeks out and honors teachers that use innovative ways to promote science education to their students. As a recipient of the Amgen Award, Wilkinson received $5,000 for his science program and $5,000 for himself.

At the awards ceremony, Wilkinson described his acceptance of the award as a humbling experience. "I put an incredible amount of time and effort into helping improve my program and classroom," Wilkinson said. "I believe this award will empower my students even more."
