Grant will improve biology and earth science labs at ASC (10-14-05)
The United States Department of Defense granted Adams State College Department of Biology and Earth Sciences $161,335 for the fiscal year 2005.
According to Dr. Brent Ybarrondo, chair of biology and earth sciences department, Adams State College received this grant opportunity expressly for being an Hispanic Serving Institution.
"Plans for the money include upgrading the existing equipment in the general biology labs and for non-major science classes," said Ybarrondo. "We can also afford to continue to provide current equipment for the upper division biology classes. This will ensure we keep pace with the latest developments in the rapidly-changing fields of molecular and cellular biology."
Adams State College added physical geography and resources management as a new major this semester. Ybarrondo said the grant money will also be used to buy equipment for the labs to support the new major.
"The focus of physical geography will be on utilizing the GIS technology for planning and management of natural resources," he said. "Several agencies, including Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife, Forest Service and Department of Wildlife, are employing graduates with knowledge of GIS technology for computerized mapping."
